Meet The Face Behind

UPPER METAL CLASS

A BRIKA maker story

T Ngu

PORTLAND, OREGON
"When I can be unafraid about something, it feels pretty damn good."
"I normally have tons of ideas in my head and written on paper."

"There's a certain amount of love and care that's put into handmade goods, and that passion seems to show through them."

"When I find something I really love, I feel as if there's a sort of subconscious connection in the idea that someone else out there gets me."

"There's a certain amount of love and care that's put into handmade goods, and that passion seems to show through them."

When T finds something she likes, she immediately feels like the person who made it gets her — why else would it resonate with her so strongly? If this is the case, then T really gets us. Her minimalist geometric accessories are carefully crafted to create a collection of basics that are anything but basic.

T was between jobs (her background is in fashion and footwear design) when she decided to take a couple of jewelry-making classes; there had been a few designs floating around her head that she wanted to get out. She became her own best advertisement as random people started asking about her precious-metal pieces. T just got it, and we now get it, too.

What does your ideal Saturday night look like?
Lying in bed with my husband and two dogs watching movies and eating junk food until I fall asleep.

Do you collect anything?
I had to think very hard about this, but I guess it would be shoes. I tend to buy shoes and never wear some of them. Bad habit.

What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Online shopping. Since I'm a workaholic, I do most of my shopping online, but if I can get out I like browsing the local shops in Echo Park and Silverlake.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was little I wanted to be a veterinarian, but I realized I was too emotional when it comes to dogs. A crying veterinarian wouldn't have panned out well.

"I was trying to make a pair of perfectly smooth circle earrings one day, but they turned out to be the total opposite and had a cool texture instead."
